At 16, Ato’s love for architecture compelled him to leave Nigeria for the United States. After successful and rigorous undergraduate architectural studies at Kansas State University and the University of Houston, he was accepted into and received his Master of Architecture degree from Yale University's School of Art and Architecture.

At Yale, he sharpened his contemporary architecture design skills.

In practice, Ato’s passion for design has been put to use for some of our finest higher education institutions: Yale, Harvard, Princeton and the University of Washington.

As designer and principal-in-charge at Ato Apiafi Architects PLLC, Ato
is focused on you – the client’s satisfaction – and bringing your dream
into a design that will help you live your life better. His current
responsibilities include managing small quick-turnaround projects within owners’ scope, budget and schedule, review design for accessibility
and building code compliance, coordinating projects’ sub-consultants,
and managing his DBE, MBE, and SCS certified firm.

Relentlessly community-driven, Ato currently serves as Chair for
the Architectural/Engineering Committee – National
Association of Minority Contractors, Washington Chapter.
He also gives back to his community voluntarily;
this includes teaching 2nd grade Sunday school
at his church.
